Susana is the Program Manager for Stepping Stones’ Shanghai English Teaching (SET) Program. Her responsibilities include recruiting, coordinating and managing volunteers and ensuring a smooth operation of the SET program.
Susana was born and raised in Mexico, where she has volunteered in rural communities since she was a child. She received a B.A. in International Relations from ITAM University and graduated with honors for a thesis concerning the socio-economic implications of a government program for Mexican migrants. Determined to follow her passion for sustainable development, she left her career in Public Relations and went to a village in northern Ghana to implement a participatory development project. Since then, she has been working in the poverty relief field and has been exposed to different cultures and dynamic environments.
“Volunteering has shaped my life in such a way that I could not picture myself without it. As a volunteer I have worn many hats and been in different places. But everywhere I go I confirm that nothing hurts human dignity more than feeling ashamed, different and annulated. That is why I joined Stepping Stones. I believe education is one of the pillars of sustainable development. In words of Amartya Sen, by providing education to these kids, we are expanding their freedom.”
