Job Vacancy – Teacher Trainer

We are looking for a qualified, experienced and motivated teacher trainer to lead Stepping Stones’ Teacher Training programs. The position is full-time, and the successful candidate will be Shanghai-based.

Stepping Stones’ Teacher Trainer has three main duties:

  1. Designing and delivering training sessions to primary school English teachers in the schools for migrant children in Shanghai to improve their awareness of English language teaching methodologies and techniques;
  2. Designing and delivering online teacher-training lessons to similar English language teachers throughout China.
  3. Providing pedagogical input and advice to our various program owners, and mentoring younger staff members.

The Shanghai-based teacher training has been ongoing since 2016, our next iteration of the program slated to begin in the spring semester of 2020. Since its inception, we have trained English teachers from nine migrant schools around the city, a total of around 100 teachers in all. We have refined our program processes and training materials during this time, so there is a large bank of program guides and training outlines awaiting the incoming trainer; however, as always, we would expect the trainer to bring his or her own ideas to the table and help us continue to refine and add to our resources. Other tasks will include visiting the schools on our current roster to conduct lesson observation and feedback sessions, providing short, needs-based trainings to these teachers, and selecting the new schools for the 2020 program, conducting a needs assessment, and planning a bespoke syllabus based on the results of the needs assessment, prior to the commencement of the training.

Regarding the Videolink Teacher Training program, so far we have completed four full iterations, with excellent results. As with the Shanghai-based program, we have a full set of program processes and training materials, which the new teacher trainer will be expected to use, review and improve. Other duties will include interviewing and selecting potential trainees, training and working with remote contract trainers, running live online training sessions, supporting volunteer facilitators of the teachers’ online English Corner, conducting site visits in rural areas around China, and monitoring and assessing the impact of the program. The next iteration of Videolink Teacher Training commences in the autumn semester of 2019, so the successful candidate will be expected to hit the ground running.

As mentioned above, the successful candidate will also be expected to mentor younger staff members, and provide an experienced point of view especially as to discussions and decisions around academic and pedagogical issues.

Please be aware that we are unable to offer a salary commensurate with teacher-trainer positions in the general ESL/EFL field; rather, as a non-profit organisation, we are looking for a candidate who is willing to compromise their potential salary level in order to help students and teachers who come from very disadvantaged backgrounds. The position would suit an experienced teacher who can afford to put job satisfaction over remuneration, or a less experienced teacher looking for the kind of work experience they might not yet be able to attain in the ESL/EFL field.


Teacher Trainer Job Description

The candidate will report to the Executive Director and work alongside our Volunteer Trainer, the Teacher Training Program Officer, the other program leaders and other support staff.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver training sessions to English teachers at primary schools for migrant children in Shanghai;
  • Build on, refine and adapt the current teacher-training materials and teaching approach to each particular group of trainees;
  • Help select a number of trainees to become ‘Champions’, train them on how to observe lessons, identify needs, and plan and deliver training;
  • Visit the trainee teachers regularly to support their ongoing development;
  • Train and support a small team of volunteers to provide weekly oral English practice to the teachers in question. Develop materials to support this project;
  • In conjunction with the Training Director, review and improve our current set of Videolink Teacher Training materials, including self-study and live-class PPTs;
  • Help recruit, interview and placement-test trainees for the Videolink Teacher Training Program;
  • Deliver online teacher-training sessions to English teachers around China and help support the online trainees with advice, feedback and encouragement via WeChat;
  • Work with the Program Director to carry out appropriate monitoring and evaluation of both teacher-training programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Educated to at least bachelor-degree level, and with a minimum English Language Teaching qualification of CELTA, TEFL or TESOL, or Teaching Chinese as a Second Language equivalent;
  • At least five years’ relevant experience, including teaching English or Chinese as a Second Language, English teacher training and/or curriculum design;
  • Interest in and / or experience of using technology for language teaching and professional development purposes;
  • Advanced-level minimum oral and written English communication skills. Chinese language skills and work experience in China would be an advantage but not essential;
  • Strong management and organisational abilities: good team player with ability to mentor and motivate staff, interns, volunteers and trainees;
  • An interest in the development sector or some experience with volunteering; and
  • Excellent work ethic with a positive and flexible attitude and excellent interpersonal skills and cross-cultural awareness.

Other Requirements

  • To ensure the sustainability of the project, a long-term commitment is preferred;
  • Note that some weekend work may be required, as some trainings will be scheduled then. We operate a flexible working schedule, where staff are encouraged to take time off to compensate for overtime worked.

Start Date:

The candidate should be available to start working for Stepping Stones ideally by 1 August 2019.

Work Location:

The Teacher Trainer will be based at Stepping Stones’ office at No. 75 Le Shan Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai, but some of the work will be carried out in the schools. Occasional working from home may also be possible.

Remuneration:

Compensation will be at local market levels in the non-profit sector and take into consideration the skills and experience of the successful applicant. We will provide all statutory benefits for Chinese nationals, or medical insurance for expatriates, plus 12 days annual leave in the first year of employment.

Stepping Stones is able to assist with visa applications for expatriates who are eligible to apply for work in China, but we are unable to cover relocation costs.
