Volunteer Opportunities

English Teaching Programs:

Other Programs:

English Teacher

Time commitment: half a day per week (including commute and lesson preparation time) and a minimum of one school term (3-4 months). We have classes every day from Monday to Sunday during the Spring and Autumn term and during the summer holiday.

Commute: 45-90 minutes each way

Transport: Stepping Stones can assist with reasonable transportation costs if needed and agreed in advance

Requirements: Fluent or native level of English; interest in communicating the English language to new learners. Good oral Chinese skills a plus but not essential.

Our English teachers are responsible for creating and delivering English language lessons to students between the ages of 6 and 15. Class sizes vary depending on the program, but can be as big as 50-60 students, lasting anywhere between 35-90 minutes each, so volunteers should be energetic and committed.

Due to large class sizes, our teachers are always paired to teach with at least one other volunteer. Placing volunteers into English teaching teams helps all students in these large classes to understand new material, participate in the lesson and follow the classroom rules.

Substitute Teacher

Time commitment: when available, half a day when needed (including commute and lesson preparation time) during the Spring and Autumn term and during the summer holiday.

Commute: 45-90 minutes each way

Transport: Stepping Stones can assist with reasonable transportation costs if needed and agreed in advance

Requirements: Good level of English; interest in communicating the English language to new learners

Substitute teachers can be volunteers from regular programs or others who would like to volunteer but are not available on a regular basis. We need substitute teachers to stand in, sometimes with short notice, when regular volunteers are unable to teach their class.

English Tutor

Time commitment: Half a day per week (including commute and preparation time) , mostly on Saturdays, and a minimum of one school term (3-4 months)

Commute: 45-90 minutes each way

Transport: Stepping Stones can assist with reasonable transportation costs if needed and agreed in advance

Requirements: Good level of English with strong oral Chinese a plus; interest in communicating the English language to new learners

Tutors are needed mainly for our tutoring programs held at community centers. Tutors work with small groups of 2-6 students at a time. Sometimes they help the students with their homework and other times they lead English activities/games. Chinese language skills are a plus. Often our tutors are high school students, but adult volunteers can become a tutor as well, or assist with the site coordination.
