 Impact Evaluation Studies

Since 2009, Stepping Stones has been conducting impact evaluation studies to measure the difference the Stepping Stones teaching programs are making to our students' confidence and interest in English.

One key highlight comes from a study that Stepping Stones completed in 2014-2015 at one of its program sites located in Minhang district, Shanghai. This study measured the impact of Stepping Stones' English teaching program on children’s English test scores and on their ability to pass English exams. An interesting aspect of this study was that it included both an experimental group, consisting of students who took part in the program, and a control group, consisting of students of the same grades (grades 4-5) and from the same school who did not take part in the program.

While the progress in English was similar in both groups during the first semester (Fall 2014), the results clearly show that students enrolled in the weekly program have made better progress in English than their classmates over the course of the second semester (Spring 2015), especially grade 4 students. It was encouraging to find that, during the Spring 2015 semester, grade 4 Students who were enrolled in the program improved their test scores in English by an average of 7.2 percentage points (from 62.2% to 69.43%), compared to an average decrease of 9 percentage points (from 52.44% to 43.46%) amongst those who didn’t enrol in the program.

Stepping Stones continues to conduct regular monitoring and evaluation initiatives and report the results, in the interest of validating the contributions of the programs and in order to continually improve the work that we do.
